I just read a comment to an online article about the importance of social media to business. The commentator was talking about how the social media platforms have made life faster. The article itself was more on the lines of how social media relationships are sometimes frail and fleeting.
The commentator wrote to say the he agreed that social media sped up things, but still thought that the outcomes would more or less be the same (as without any of these platforms? Maybe). This comment in turn led me to think of something else that I intend putting here for your reference, and later you could revert with a comment regarding what you think about this.
Social media platforms are simply instruments in the hands of those who use them. Thus, social media platforms may have made it faster and easier to communicate and socialize. Whether they have also improved our communication skills is a point that remains to be answered. My point is simply this, that social media platforms will and can be only as good as their users.
Social media platforms and, for that matter, every other kind of technology is a tool. Like those other tools, social media can be used for positive, forward-looking, and meaningful exchange of informal capital. And again, like other tools, these tools can also be used for all the wrong reasons, but I am not going into that for now.
However, I’ll concede that because of our own limitations, we do increasingly require such tools. Socialization is best done in person. In a time when that just does not happen, it is difficult to be socially connected to the rest of the world.
Businesses definitely cannot do without online social networking options. These platforms are fast emerging as the ideal place to promote your offerings. Such platforms provide not only an additional channel for a firm’s marketing efforts; they are now a major channel by themselves. Soon, social media platforms will be as business-friendly as they can get and become a preferred standard for a major part of all promotional activity.
Understanding the value of social networks and social media platforms is a valuable first step towards making it good online. Have you started promoting your products and services there?
