What should your web page layout be and look like? What elements of a well-designed website actually attract visitors and retain them? Any number of pointers can be had online. Having read up on some, the impression that I got was that there are too many website designs out there that haven’t got it right. Garishness and haphazard web design are more common than sensible web page layouts.
Whereas the experts recommend a minimalistic layout for web pages with only the coolest colors, quite opposite is the case with many web page layout examples I have seen.
So what should your website or your web page layouts look like? How do you develop an online presence that at once builds an impressive online identity AND is so user friendly people actually want to spend time once they’re there? The answer to these and related questions lies in identifying what it is that the website can offer them. The following are a couple of options:
- A corporate website could offer information – a very valuable commodity these days. What does the company do, how does its work help its clients, and how can clients benefit from whatever it is the company does? And how does the layout of a web page present the message contained in the web page content? The value offered is what matters in creating an online image.
- An ecommerce store could not have it laid out better. Products are what consumers want and that is what will either make them stay and shop or leave as soon as they see something that turns them off.
I have seen some web page layout examples that I would like to return to again and again, for the perfect balance between content and design they have achieved. Then there’s eBay, which I enjoy browsing through, if only for window shopping purposes. Once in a while there’s a product that I badly want and even info on it, sometimes. If the price is right, chances are I’ll go for it. If not is another story.
Clear demarcation of the various parts of the web page layout seems to me a factor whose importance cannot possibly be exaggerated. This means having enough margins between the elements to clearly demarcate what starts or ends where. Then on, there are of course things such as black text on a white background, concise and crisp text, and colors that are not heavy on the eyes.
Make it a point to ensure that the web page layout of your business website is designed to make it easier for prospective clients. And just totally avoid all the fancy stuff – you have only 7 seconds to impress your visitor.
